Working with #chambersofcommerce and their members to create a stronger, more purposeful relationship between them.

About us

Momentum bridges the gap between chambers of commerce and their members, working to create reliable two-way communication, so that each knows how the other defines a valuable membership experience. Momentum for Businesses For our business clients who are members in these organizations, Craig works with you to develop, optimize and implement a spending (time and money) strategy that will yield results! We have relationships with chambers of commerce and other business associations across the U.S. and Canada, and know the science and art of how to utilize them to meet your company’s growth goals. Momentum for Chambers of Commerce Momentum’s chamber of commerce network runs far-and-wide, touching all parts of the U.S. and Canada. In addition to bringing new members your way, we offer an array of services including consulting, ambassador training, member benefit programs and the IT’S ALL ABOUT WHO YOU KNOW Podcast (Web | Apple | Google | Spotify | Stitcher). We know that chambers of commerce have hundreds, even thousands, of members, and that if you were able, you would provide personalized service to each and every one of them. But you can’t. It’s not possible. So we focus on educating companies on how to communicate with their chambers, and helping them to build strategies that make it easier for you to provide them value.

I've been contemplating lately LinkedIn comments, and our attitudes toward them vs. the algorithm. Some of my connections - most prominently Khemie Khan and Kirke Männik - in the past couple weeks have mentioned something publicly, and in DM, that they appreciate the thought and effort I put into into comments. I definitely appreciate them noticing - and, it made me think. Here's my philosophy: If I'm going to take the time to spend on LinkedIn and comment on people's posts, I want the interaction to be as solid and meaningful as I can make it. Meaning, if I have a half-hour, I'd rather engage impactfully with 10 people's posts, than randomly on 50 others. I guess that probably hurts me some with the algorithm (which I think is sad and wrong), but I'm incredibly pleased with some very 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 relationships I've been able to create here on LinkedIn, with people from all around the world (which still blows my mind). Outstanding storytellers, like Joya Dass, Casey Rickey and Marti Konstant, MBA. Posters that catch me by surprise with stuff, amid a lot of the "same-old, same-old" on LinkedIn, like Christopher Wright, Daria Lukina and Khemie (mentioned above). People knocking it out of the park with video, like John Kraski, Kirke (mentioned above!) and Michelle Vernuccio, MBA. And absolute power users who generously take the time to interact, like Holly Crawshaw and Lindsay Rosenthal. In the end, comments are a powerful way to build a relationship. In the spirit of the algorithm, people try to respond to comments on their posts... It's an important best practice. How much easier do you make their lives by giving them something thought-provoking to respond to? In the interest of (you) building a relationship, what do you think will resonate more with the poster? "I get what you're saying. Here's an example of how that's relevant to my business." or "Great post." ???? I like to think of LinkedIn networking as parallel with real-life networking. 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆, 𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗮 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 y𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲.... 𝗔𝗻𝗱, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱, "𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼," 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆? THANK GOODNESS the LinkedIn algorithm doesn't apply to real-life interpersonal relationships!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Don't live for the algorithm. Put thought into your comments, and try to drive engagement with the person you're supporting with your engagement. I'm convinced there's no more efficient value you can provide here on this platform! Special thanks to Khemie and Kirke for inspiring this post! #momentum #networking

  • We did not feel obligated to give a gift for Small Business Week, but here's one anyway!!! #momentum #smallbusiness #ChatGPT

How about kicking off Small Business Week with a #smallbusiness GPT?!! What's the hardest part of attending a #networking event? This isn't an introvert question - it's not about talking to people. No, the hardest part of a attending a networking event is 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝘂𝗽. You know this. We all let it slide. Go to a great networking mixer... Lots of new contacts and "good conversations"... But, as soon as you get back to your desk in the morning, you're back into your to-do list. You intend to get to your follow-ups, but that stack of business cards ultimately gets thrown into a big pile with all the others. Unfortunately, not only is following up the hardest part of networking... It's also the most important. ⚡💻 Enter AI... 💻⚡ Recently, we created a new GPT exactly for this purpose. As a quick refresher, a GPT is an AI "bot" that can help you automate a task that you have to do over and over. This particular one - "Networking Follow-Up Connector" - with one click of a button creates copy that you can easily cut-and-paste into a LinkedIn connection request after a networking event. You simply enter the person's: - First Name - Last Name - Company, and - A quick note about what you talked about (I've set it up so you can put your list in the chat window or attach a spreadsheet - either way works) The GPT will return customized copy for each new contact, in a format, style and length for a solid LinkedIn "Connect" request. Let's talk about what this means: 1. You're going to forget to do these follow-ups, so this GPT just accomplished something important for you that you weren't even going to get to. 2. You DO remember to follow up with everyone, which would take you an hour out of your day - ChatGPT just brought it down to about five minutes, including compiling the info and cutting-and-pasting. I see lots of opinions about GPTs here on LinkedIn - including a from people who are sour on them. I'm a massive fan. We're created several that we use 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 for a variety of productivity purposes. For small business, they can be invaluable time savers. This week, that's what it's all about - providing tools, guidance, education and inspiration to help small businesses grow. Happy Small Business Week!!! #momentum

I promised I'd share my "hook" for yesterday's #networking webinar... First of all... Great time with the Better Business Bureau national team yesterday... Good interactions, great questions and I loved the feedback. My hook: I always laugh at medicine commercials. You know the ones - happy people strolling in beautiful parks and playing croquet while a voiceover tells you all the possible side effects of the drug being advertised? My favorite part: the fine print at the bottom, which usually tells you that the medicine will work best... IF you adopt a more health lifestyle. - Eat better. - Exercise more. - Don't have caffeine, sugar, artificial sweeteners, alcohol or cholesterol. You know what I'm talking about. The connection is that when most people think about "networking," they think about going to events and mingling. I know this, because of the question I always get... "I'm an introvert... How can I be good at networking?" The question itself helps me to understand what you think networking is. 💊 Going to networking events is the medicine in the ad. 💊 Can it work for you alone? Sure. Read the fine print. Will it work better if you do other things to support it? You betcha. Our presentation to the BBB team focused on the "long game" of networking. Because "networking" isn't about events. Well, it's not JUST about events. It's about creating a strategy to build strong relationships yielding mutual value - and then implementing that strategy. For introverts, one of their favorite things in life to do is make plans, and then follow them. Which means... If you understand the 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 definition of networking, then introverts can be powerhouse networker! To empower the BBB folks - more than 60 of them on the call, representing regional offices all over the country, we focused on: - What Networking IS and IS NOT - Strategy - Execution of a Plan - Storytelling - Introvert Networking Notice the word "event" is not in that outline. Events can be an important part of a networking plan. Interestingly enough, IF you know your target audience and can find ways to access it, you could actually network effectively without needing mixers. Kind of mind-blowing to think about. (Don't get me wrong, networking events with a strategy are powerful) But, do you know how many B2B deals are made because people's kids' played on the same soccer team? Or, they serve on the same non-profit board? See each other at a coffee shop every Thursday morning? I told the BBB team that the main takeaway I wanted them to have is that networking is strategy first. Understand your target audience, find them, engage with them, provide value, and think long term. That's how you find networking success. I shared a bunch of stories about this, and have boatloads more. You have any good "long game" networking stories? *** Special thanks, again, to Melanie McGovern for the invite to speak!!!

  • Doing some big-time #networking in Pittsburgh yesterday and today!!! #momentum

I wish that 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 like a local in #Pittsburgh got you in-state tuition!!!! 🤣 Yesterday, I arrived early from Buffalo for a meeting, and grabbed a table at Panera (Sip Club!!!) at Settlers Ridge to work for a little bit. Was pleasantly surprised when Christopher Mathewson walked in for his own meeting, and we had the chance to chat for a little while. Having a colleague walk into a coffee shop where I'm camped out happens all the time at home in Western New York.... First time it's happened here! This morning, had the opportunity to catch an impromptu breakfast with Chris Heck, and talk about Pittsburgh Airport Area Chamber stuff for a bit. That breakfast was at my favorite place, Eggs N'at, where I got the chance to say hi to one of my favorite small business owners, Kelly Engel. Kelly came out of the kitchen to tell me something awesome... She said, "I've been thinking of your name." I was like what do you mean? She says, "Your name has 'AI' in it." 🤯 I always say... We marketing people can do all kinds of cool stuff for our clients, but we're really bad at marketing ourselves. I mean... Why choose any other AI consultant, when you can work with someone who has AI 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲?!!! 🤣🤣 Take that, Ruben Hassid!!!! (I'm joking... If you're doing ANYTHING with AI, you MUST follow Ruben here on LinkedIn). (And I actually wrote a novel, THE CAMPaiGN, where I accentuated the "AI" in the middle of the title.... STILL never put that together!!) Thank you, Kelly, for that!!! #Networking in a market you don't live in takes strategy to make the most of every visit. That includes doing everything in your power to show value to folks every single time, to build a reputation that can be called upon when needed. I love doing business in Pittsburgh, and feel like the way we're approaching it is yielding results. I will admit that Joel Turner, who's studying at Pitt, DID correct me yesterday when I misused "YINZ"... So, I do still have some work to do. I'll get there.

Northside North Shore Chamber of Commerce members!!!! Now, I don't know the rules officially, so don't quote me, but I do believe if you still wanted to register for our 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗚𝗣𝗧 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 webinar at 2 p.m. this afternoon, that Gina, Quinn and Patrick will let you. I hope you can join us. The way our program is set up, I give about 20 minutes of AI insights, including updates and advancements right up through this week. Then, we dig into prompts. And, because we focus specifically on small business prompts, they are scenarios and solutions that you can use 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 when we sign off. Our goals for our trainings: - Educate you on AI - Empower you with AI - Inspire you to use AI As we like to say, this is no "ChatGPT overview". We're going to get into the weeds of how AI works, and how your small business can use it daily to save time, increase productivity, and have a better conversation with your customers. Looking forward to seeing Yinz at 2 p.m.!!!! #ChatGPT #AI #Pittsburgh

One phone call changed the course of our company. I've been reminiscing. Next week - one week from today - we're hosting our 6th(!!) Member Value Workshop for the Pittsburgh Airport Area Chamber. Prepping for the session yesterday, it made me reflect on how we got here. Back in the spring of 2021, I got a phone call from Chris Heck, President & CEO for the PAACC. I'd been working with Chris for a few years on behalf of my client, Damon Piatek, who was a member of the chamber. Also, I'd recently rebranded Momentum Public Affairs, LLC, my PR agency, into Momentum - The Business Growth Agency, and had been peppering #LinkedIn with posts aimed at chamber of commerce members on how to get more ROI from their memberships. I'll never forget Chris' words on the call: "We've talked about Damon. I want to know more about what you're doing." Then, he hit me with something I didn't expect... Would I be interested in working with the PAACC Ambassador team? To be honest, it was one of those entrepreneurial moments where you agree to something you've never done, with plans to figure it out later. But, I said an enthusiastic YES. We built a three part program: (1) train the ambassadors; (2) present to the board; and (3) as Chris put it, "Bring it directly to members." We knocked out #1 and #2 to positive reviews, and then Chris called me: "How should we do #3?" "I have an idea," I told him. That idea was the Member Value Workshop - a roundtable workshop, in which I would walk members through the creation of a strategy to make the most of their membership. In September, 2022, we tried it... We even said in the promotion of the program that we were "trying something" (thank you, Michelle Kreutzer and Jaime Andrade Budesa, CMP for going along with me on that!!). It worked. Enough that we ran it again. And again. And again. It's a powerful tool - both to help chamber members see the value of their membership, AND help the chamber with member retention. While we've done the MVW for a number of chambers, I am thrilled that we've put close to 70 companies through PAACC's program. I'm looking forward to next week's cohort, and meeting some more awesome PAACC members. *** When Chris first asked me about doing Ambassador Training, the idea of consulting with chambers wasn't even in my field of vision. I always joke, "I had to go design a whole new web site because of that call." But Chris' request has led to consulting gigs, keynote invites, Virtual Ambassador Training, ChatGPT training for chambers, new products and services, many of my most favorite professional relationships, and pretty much everything else Momentum has going on. I'm extremely appreciative, and it's my absolute pleasure to be a part of the PAACC's exciting growth. See you next Wednesday! #chamberofcommerce #chambersofcommerce #momentum #pittsburgh
