The Mental Health Watchdog - Investigating & Exposing Psychiatric Abuse and working to protect Human Rights.
About us
The Florida chapter of CCHR is an award winning non-profit in the area of mental health human rights and government relations. CCHR is a non-political, non-religious mental health watchdog. Its mission is to eradicate abuses committed under the guise of mental health and enact patient and consumer protections. CCHR Florida has already proven a major player in the state’s fight against psychiatric abuse. After discovering that 55 percent of foster children in Florida had been prescribed powerful mind-altering psychotropic drugs, the commission documented the abuse to the health department which initiated changes that led to a 75 percent reduction in prescriptions for children under six. Additionally, working with the Florida legislature, CCHR Florida helped enact a law which prohibits public schools’ involvement in the psychiatric drugging of children. CCHR Florida also led the charge that got “Teen Screen”, mental health screening of school children, banned from Pinellas County schools in 2005. More recently, CCHR Florida helped to pass legislation that protects children from involuntary psychiatric examinations and that guarantees a parent's right to direct the mental health of their children.

What does “Baker Act” mean? What is the “72-hour clock?” Does a person who has been Baker Acted have any rights? How long can an individual be held? How do I get someone out of a Baker Act? These questions are common. https://conta.cc/49FAhEw

In an article titled, "9 Serious Concerns about Depression Screening for Youth" the efficacy of screening children for depression is brought into question. One of the liabilities brought to light by this article is the lack of research on whether screenings actually lead to better outcomes. Without evidence that children and teens benefit from the screenings it must be asked, who does benefit? The answer is pharmaceutical companies and the field of mental health. https://conta.cc/49DSRwJ

There are bills filed in Florida that would ban the use of the electroshock machine (ECT) on children. Senate Bill 252: Psychiatric Treatments filed by Senator Osgood and House Bill 255: Psychiatric Treatments filed by Rep. Amesty have been assigned to a series of committees that they must pass through in order to become law. However, we are running out of time and your help is needed! Mental Health Expert: Why Are We Still Electroshocking Children? Today's doctors are struggling to treat psychological problems and despite that, we are still using electroshock — even on children. In 2003, Dr. Loren Mosher and Professor David Cohen wrote a brief paper, "The Ethics of Electroconvulsive Therapy." Cohen starts by asking readers that if the first and foremost rule of the medical profession is to do no harm, then what are we doing promoting an ineffective procedure without the informed consent of patients?https://conta.cc/3Soweqa
