Animal health update. 🐬🩺 Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s animal health team has been treating Rudy, our male resident rough-toothed dolphin, for pneumonia since earlier this year. We've been closely monitoring his progress, and adjusting treatment based on ongoing diagnostics and expert consultations. Tuesday morning, Rudy began exhibiting symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort. The animal care and animal health teams monitored him overnight and observed some behavioral signs of discomfort into the early evening. The next day, Rudy began demonstrating more relaxed behavior and small signs of improvement. Our team will keep monitoring and rechecking diagnostics as appropriate. To aid Rudy’s digestion and avoid further GI upset, he will be consuming gruel - a kind of fish smoothie. We are so thankful for your support as our expert veterinary and animal care team members continue to work around the clock to ensure Rudy’s wellbeing. Our team is committed to providing the best medical care possible for Rudy and all the other animals in our care! Check our website for more health updates: https://lnkd.in/ekEsi5GP

Check out our sea turtle patient page: https://brnw.ch/21wK4Fn All marine turtle footage taken in Florida was obtained with the approval of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under conditions not harmful to marine turtles. Footage was acquired while conducting authorized conservation activities pursuant to FWC MTP-23/24-172.

  • Welcome home! 🐢💎 Today, two juvenile Kemp's ridley sea turtles were released following rehabilitation at CMA! The two turtles, named Amethyst and Jasper, both suffered from hook related injuries after being caught by fishermen in Cedar Key. Amethyst ingested two hooks which our team was able to remove without surgery! Jasper had a hook embedded in their right front flipper which was easily removed. Following rehab at CMA, both turtles were cleared for release by our veterinarian and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission! We wish Amethyst and Jasper well on their journey!

CMA Research Institute team members in Belize recently responded to a report of an injured manatee near the Placencia Lagoon. The juvenile manatee was having difficulty swimming and submerging itself. The team and community volunteers responded to rescue this animal and transfer it to be rehabbed. Unfortunately, despite rehab efforts, this animal's health was severely compromised and it did not survive. Our mission to protect manatees around the world continues.

  • Thank you to FOX13 Tampa Bay who visited Clearwater Marine Aquarium Thursday to get a sneak peek at our soon-to-open Manatee Rehabilitation Center. For more than 20 years we have worked with the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership (MRP) to rescue and release manatees, as well as tag them with satellite tracking devices which helps track their migration and feeding patterns. This will allow CMA to complete the full circle of our mission - rescue, rehab and release.
